The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European regulatory text (Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, repealing Directive 95/46/EC) that provides a framework for the processing of data equally throughout the European Union (EU). The RGPD follows on from the 1978 "Informatique et Libertés" law, amended by the law of 20 June 2018 on the protection of personal data, establishing rules on the collection and use of data on French territory. It has been designed around three objectives:
- Strengthening people's rights;
- Make data processors more accountable;
- To make regulation more credible through closer cooperation between data protection authorities.
